HOWTO: Install Ubuntu Server as a VirtualBox Guest

Install VirtualBox

See my short HOWTO: Installing VirtualBox or go to the Downloads page on the VirtualBox site.

If you are running X you will be able to run the GUI for Virtual box. This is probably the simplest way to start with and while you are learning to use VirtualBox. If you want to use the command line interface see my Mini HOWTO.

Initial screen


The default place to store VirtualBox machines and configuration files for the machines in in your home directory. I only have a small quota for my home directory and therefore store store virtual machines on a large raid5 array mounted at /data. I therefore changed the Default Hard Disk Folder and Machine folder to be store on that filesystem.

Preferences


Enter the Name by which You will know this installation. This name will also be used to name the xml configuration file and will be the suggested file name to the hard disk files. The select the Operating System Linux and the type of Linux Ubuntu 64 bit.

Select the amount of RAM that the VM will use. 1 Gigabyte will be enough.

Set up the Hard disk, is it to be a new drive or reuse an existing one.

Select the type of Drive, dynamically expanding for fixed size. Read the text on the screen and make your decision.

Set the location where the drive will be stored and its size. Remember it cannot be enlarged.

A quick summary and the basic machine is now setup

Now to customise the basic system. We do not need a floppy disk. Can you remember what one of those actually looks like) :) So remove it from the Boot Order

We will need to enable PAX, Ubuntu Server requires this.

We also need to turn on nested paging.

Now to set the CDROM drive we want to point this at the Ubuntu Server installation ISO file. Select ISO Image and click the little icon on the right to allow us to search for the file.

Click the Add button and then use the popup dialog to find the iso image for Ubuntu Server.
Click OK and then Select to return.

Networking setup. Make sure the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop NIC is chosen and it is attached as a Bridged Adaptor.

That is it the new virtual Machine is nowe configured and ready to run.
