HOWTO: Install and Configure ssh

I install openssh server and sort out setting up the right ssh keys for the user so I can login to other machines locally without a password. This is a security risk! I want to use Xwindows programs installed and run on one machine while actually running on another, hence the ForwardX11 bit.

Backing Up and Restoring

I use the rather wonderful bit of software called BackupPC to backup and restore my various PCs. The documentation is really very good and you should go read that rather than this mini-howto. :>

HOWTO Enlarge A VMware Disk

This is what I do to make sure I can easily and simply enlarge the virtual disk for my Linux Vmware guests.

When installing make sure there is a /boot partition of around 250Mb at the beginning of the disk. This is plenty and should never need to be resized.

Next I put the swap partition and then the remaining unused disk as a single partition mounted as root. This means the disk space that is in use is at the end of the disk. If you put the swap space at the end of the disk you have to keep moving it and that just takes time.

I also add a label to both the boot and root partitions created above as it makes identifying in the /etc/fstab much much easier.

HOWTO To Change The Hostname

So for whatever reason you need to change the hostname of your Ubuntu Linux machine. For me this is usually because I am playing around with a copy of a Vmware machine and well its needs a unique name. :)

HOWTO get a Packard Bell scanner working.

Do not buy a Packard Bell scanner get something else! 
 

If that is too late then at least in Linux (unlike Vista) you can get it to work. The Diamond 1200 plus is as far as I can tell from the web a rebadged Mustek Bearpaw 1200 something.
