Hints and Tips for testing and trying things out.

2. Take the time to read the man pages, documentation and HOWTOs. Remembering to read them all the way through before doing anything. In other words:
3. When following instructions try and get a good understanding of what out are doing, but always

  • Follow the instructions.
  • All of them.
  • In the order they were written.
  • Yes that does mean you!

4. Learn to use one of the many virtualisation systems. You can then set up a small copy of your own system live system in a virtual machine. This way whenever you want to play around with anything you can do so knowing that if it all goes horribly wrong you can simply to make another copy of your vitrual machine. It only takes a few minutes to make a copy of a virtual machine simply use the cp command.

I use VMware as it is now free and not that difficult to setup on Ubuntu Linux. It is particularly useful for those tasks that involve grub, RAID, or configuration of the screen when one simple mistake and oh s$%t the system will no longer boot or nothing appears on the screen.
