HOWTO: Setup Exim to talk to postfix for local email

To talk to my postfix mail server for local internal email from other hosts on my side of the router, i.e. local mail. (usually mail to root). Install and configure postfix.

sudo apt-get install postfix

This will automatically run the configure script. I used these options

sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix

Assuming my system has:

  • a hastname of workstation
  • a domain of example.com
  • the real mail server is mail.example.com
  • mail to root is redirected to someuser as it will not be delivered to root on the mail server

General type of mail configuration: Satellite system

System mail name: workstation.example.com

SMTP relay host (blank for none): mail.example.com

Root and postmaster mail recipient: someuser

Other destinations to accept mail (blank for none): This is blank

And that was all there was to it.

Here are a collection of Mini-HOWTOs some of which are too short even for that grand title. I keep them around as it is easier to remember where to look these up that to remember the content of the mini-HOWTO
